This past June 2024, we embarked on one of the most exciting adventures that can be lived in national territory: the express ascent to the Teide, the highest peak in Spain with its impressive 3,718 meters. With a small and very motivated group, we set out to conquer the top of the volcano to enjoy an incomparable natural spectacle: the sunset from the roof of Spain.

Preparation: Training and good planning

Teide is not just any mountain. Its altitude and volcanic environment make it a challenge that requires thorough preparation, especially when it comes to an express ascent. For this trip, an adequate level of physical fitness and experience in high mountain hiking is necessary.

From the first moment, the objective was clear: to reach the summit in time to witness the sunset, a magical moment that transforms the volcanic landscape into a spectacle of light and shadow. The planning included all the necessary details to ensure that the experience was safe and rewarding. This involved bringing the right equipment, which included warm clothing for low temperatures at the summit, front lanterns for night descent and enough water and food to keep us during the crossing.

The Ascence: Beauty and challenge at every step

We started our route at the base station of Monta’a Blanca, in the middle of sunset, to ensure that we have enough time to complete the ascent before sunset. As we gained altitude, the landscape was transformed, from volcanic sands and black rocks to the majestic fields of solidified lava. The vegetation, scarce but resistant, added touches of green to the arid environment.

The group maintained a constant rhythm, enjoying the silence and immensity of the Teide National Park. A sustained ascent of 1400m for about 10 kilometers that passed soon, enlivened by the company and the landscape that surrounded us. The proximity of twilight added an extra layer of emotion to the ascent; we knew that we were about to witness a unique landscape, we were already above the niguls.

The Summit: An unparalleled show

Finally, we reached the summit just in time for sunset. The views from the Teide are simply impressive. At our feet, a sea of clouds extended to the horizon, while the sun began to descend, dyeing the sky in orange, red and purple tones. This culminating moment reminded us why we are passionate about hiking: the reward of reaching the highest, both physically and emotionally.

The atmosphere at the top was pure calm. Soft temperature, absence of wind and sulfur fumeroles. We were able to enjoy the sunset while we had dinner, with views of the neighboring islands and with the pyramid-shaped shadow of Teide itself projected into the sea.

The Descendant: Under the stars

After sunset, we prepared for the descent under a starry sky, guided by the light of our lanterns and the glow of the moon. The descent was rapid, marked by the satisfaction of having successfully fulfilled our mission.

Until the next adventure!
